Lakeview Music: Distance Learning

This will be the "music room" while we're not together for the rest of the school year. Thank you for being here! I miss you!

Week 7: Band Instruments

  1. Watch my short introduction video from start to finish.
  2. Watch at least 3 of the instrument demonstration videos.

BONUS:

  • Join Mr. Schmeltzer and me on Zoom on Monday at 1:00 (see your Google Classroom for the link). You'll be able to ask Mr. Schmeltzer questions about middle school band and about different instruments!
  • Email me to tell me which instrument you would choose to play if you were to join band. (There are other choices, too, like percussion, oboe, tuba, french horn!)

Week 6: Music & P.E.

  1. Watch the video made by Mr. Marana and myself!
  2. Choose a song you love that you have a way of listening to.
  3. Find the beat by making sounds like clapping and patting.
  4. Keep the beat with exercises like jumping jacks, sit-ups, and push-ups.

BONUS: Email the name of the song you chose to Mr. Marana and me- or better yet, send us a video of you keeping a beat to the music! You can also join us on Zoom to share your song and beats with us.

4th Graders: If you’re interested in joining band next year, keep checking in on this site each week. Mr. Schmeltzer and I are planning on holding a special activity for you sometime in the next few weeks where you can learn more about band and the instruments you could play!

Week 5: Music & Art

  1. Watch the video. It's 12 minutes long, but includes a cartoon from YouTube!
  2. Listen to the songs using the players below the video.
  3. Choose one of the songs to listen to while you “paint what you hear.” You can replay the song if you need more time to paint.
  4. Repeat with the other painting if you’re having fun!

BONUS: Email a picture of your painting to Mrs. Gustafson and me or share it with us on Zoom! Be sure to tell us which song inspired your painting.

"The Ride of the Valkyries" by Richard Wagner

"Verklarte Nacht" by Arnold Shoenberg

Week 4: Bach

  1. Watch the video. It's 15 minutes, but includes a cartoon from PBS Kids!
  2. Visit the Sounds of Nature page to see what nature/music connections your classmates made last week.
  3. Play some music on a piano, recorder, or violin- 3 of Bach's favorite instruments. (Actually, the piano wasn't invented yet in Bach's time, but I'm sure not many of you have an organ at home!) Don't have any of those instruments? You can use this online piano or the My Piano Phone app on iOS or Android.
  • BONUS: Email me a video or audio recording of yourself making music like Bach!

Week 3: Beethoven

  1. Watch my 5-minute introduction video from start to finish.
  2. Re-visit Lakeview Music Lessons and follow along with 1 listening map.
  3. Learn more about Beethoven. Visit Quaver Music. Log in to Student Interactives with our class code - QB7UN - and click on "Quaver Books" and then "Beethoven." Choose Basic or Advanced and click your way through, listening to examples along the way. Do the quiz at the end.
  4. Spend some time outside and listen for sounds of nature. Find ways to make the same sounds you heard outside when you're inside.
  • BONUS: Email me a list of the sounds you heard, a picture of something you heard, or a video of yourself making music inspired by the sounds you heard!

Week 2: Listening Maps

Week 1: Singalong

  • Watch my introduction video.
  • Watch the video instructions for the Lakeview Music Sing-Along site.
  • Visit the Lakeview Music Sing-Along site and choose at least 3 songs to listen to. Sing, dance, or keep a beat while the songs play!
  • BONUS: Send me an email with a name of a song you'd like me to add to the playlist. If it's available, I'll add it and let you know!
